Though Arabs make up 20 percent of the overall Israeli population, there is scant mention of them in textbooks used in state secular and religious schools in the Jewish sector, according to a mapping project conducted by Sikkuy, a civil society organization dedicated to advancing equality between Jews and Arabs in all spheres of life. The report recommends that the Education Ministry formulate guidelines with clear criteria for diversity in teaching materials, proposing, among other things, that at least 20 percent of names portrayed in each textbook be Arabic. KAN's Naomi Segal heard more about the mapping project from Yaala Mazor, Project Coordinator in the Shared Society department at Sikkuy.
