Israel Democracy Institute President Yohanan Plesner said in response to recent discussion of enacting a direct election for the prime minister that this system wreaked havoc on the political system in the 1990s, and was rightfully discontinued. He told KAN reporter Naomi Segal that a long-term solution can be found in electoral reform that ensures that the head of the largest party automatically form the government, and begin its work without the need for an initial vote of confidence from the Knesset.
