As we mark the 116th anniversary of the death of Theodore Herzl , an article by American Jewish progressive writer Peter Beinart has been making waves lately for calling an end to a two-state solution and advocating a binational homeland for Jews and Palestinians. Gil Troy, a professor of history at McGill University and author of The Zionist Ideas, dismissed Beinart’s proposal as more of an attempt by him to fit in with the American left. He told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that creative efforts by the government, led by Diaspora Affairs Minister Omer Yankelevitch, would focus on building bridges between Israel and world Jewry instead of on the extremists like Beinart.
