Against the backdrop of the ongoing World Zionist Congress, the Abayudaya Jewish community of Uganda has formally applied to form a Zionist Federation within the World Zionist Organization, a move it hopes will help the community with its Zionist activities, as well gaining rights for the community within Uganda. Its effort is being assisted by the World Confederation of General Zionists.  The roots of the Abayudaya community extend back to the early 20th century, after its founder, exposed to the Old Testament, adopted Judaism. KAN reporter Naomi Segal heard more about the community and its current efforts from community activist Avram Mukiibi, who spoke to us from Uganda.
