An internal government committee has approved  the controversial candidacy of former right-wing politician Efi Eitam to take up the position of Chair of Yad Vashem.

The cabinet will make the final decision.

Eitam is a former IDF general  who has made comments in the past endorsing the forcible population transfer of Palestinians and in favor of blocking Israeli Arab participation in the Israeli political system.

Eitam was nevertheless selected by Higher Education Minister Ze’ev Elkin of the Likud to fill the role of Yad Vashem Chair, which will soon be vacated by current Chair Avner Shalev.

Former Labor party Knesset member Colette Avital, who heads the Center of Organizations of Holocaust Survivors, told KAN's Mark Weiss why she is against appointing Eitam.
