October is breast cancer awareness month – in Israel, some 5,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer a year. Early detection is key to successful treatment and survival. Israel's health basket now covers BRCA gene testing for any woman with an Ashkenazi Jewish background. Mutations of this gene, more frequently found in this demographic group, are associated with elevated risk for breast and other cancers.
